Sydney Wilson

Daily Point of Light # 5487 May 27, 2015

College freshman Sydney Wilson started Ocean Hour, a beach cleanup club when she was a junior in high school. “A lot of people go to the beaches and leave their trash without a second thought, and then the trash will make it into the ocean and harm the marine life,” says Wilson when explaining what inspired her to start cleaning.

The club hosts two monthly cleanups and also helps volunteers become scuba certified so that they can participate in reef cleaning. Wilson does her best to accommodate all schedules, making sure she can get the most participation possible. “Volunteering is very important to me. Every little piece you help with can create a wave of participation from others.”
