Pete Caldwell

Daily Point of Light # 4610 Oct 7, 2011

Pete Caldwell is a shining example of a mission-driven volunteer whose success can be attributed to the heartfelt love he demonstrates for the children of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Even through his own personal struggles, Pete brings hope, strength and joy to countless children struggling with the effects of life-threatening medical conditions. Bringing smiles to the children of Make-A-Wish has brought much more to him than personal gratification. It has given Pete, who recently faced his own life-threatening medical condition and underwent treatment for this illness, his own source of hope, strength, and joy.
As a long time employee of Northwest Airlines, Pete works to send children and their families on their dream vacations to travel to places they otherwise would not have the opportunity to see. He gives the excited and sometimes nervous travelers first-class treatment. With many families taking their very first trip, their encounter with Pete helps to calm nerves and generate excitement for all that awaits them.
Pete has a sincere desire to provide these families with the sendoff they deserve, which results in permission for families to relax in the World Club, usually exclusive to Northwest Employees and members, get an advanced tour of the plane, visit with the pilots and enjoy curbside check-in at the airport. Going down the hallway one feels as if they are in the company of a celebrity as he yells to passing gate agents the name and destination of the wish child. Some agents have been so inspired by Pete’s love for the children that they decorate their gate areas and make special announcements regarding the child’s presence on board. Each and every time, these boys and girls truly feel like the V.I.P’s that they are.
Thanks to Pete, the magic of a child’s travel wish begins way before take-off. This is why Pete is a Daily Point of Light.
