NORTHERN VIRGINIA FAMILY SERVICE

Daily Point of Light # 1837 Feb 16, 2001

The mission of Northern Virginia Family Service (NVFS) is to empower individuals and families to improve their quality of life, and to promote community cooperation and support in responding to family needs. This private, nonprofit human service agency was founded in 1924 and has been identifying and meeting community needs since its inception.

The agency serves Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William through nine office locations and more than 200 staff. They are a member of the Alliance for Children and Families and have an annual budget of $9.8 million. Funding for NVFS is provided through individual and corporate giving, foundation grants, United Way, and government contracts.

NVFS has touched the lives of more than 21,000 children. They have provided job training for men and women in essential office skills, located affordable health and dental care for children and adults, and preserved families overwhelmed by children with special needs. They have also worked to prevent child abuse and neglect, foster care for children with special physical and emotional needs and housing for homeless mothers and their children who are striving for self-sufficiency. In addition to that, NVFS provides family and individual counseling, youth initiative programs for at-risk youth, and credit counseling.

NVFS has a commitment to strengthening family and mobilizing the community. They recognize area businesses that provide exceptionally supportive workplace policies and involve more than 1,000 volunteers who donate their time and resources in support of NVFS programs annually.

NVFS has a strong foundation and are working to continually strengthen their organization, which, in turn, will strengthen Falls Church and other areas in Virginia. They believe families are the heart of our society and need to be strengthened and preserved, and services should be affordable, accessible and of high quality. They also believe everyone should have access to adequate housing, health care, food and clothing. In addition to this, NVFS believes that communities should be supportive environments for families, and staff should be supported in order to provide quality services. NVFS continues to be the leading source of help for families in need. They will continue to work to make Virginia a strong and productive community.
