Houston Teen Serves Local Community Through Multiple Organizations

Daily Point of Light # 6622 Oct 7, 2019

Meet Daily Point of Light Award honoree Kam’rin Christal. Read his story and nominate an outstanding volunteer or family as a Daily Point of Light.

Fifteen-year-old rising sophomore and Houston native Kam’rin Christal began volunteering with United Way of Greater Houston last year and has no plans to stop any time soon. The dedicated volunteer, who wishes to become a cardiovascular surgeon, is inspired by his need to see the best for others.

Kam’rin provides help wherever it is needed at UWGH but his main volunteer focus is with 2-1-1 Texas, a community aid helpline, which helps connect Texas citizens with services they need. Kam’rin makes sure the education team at 2-1-1 Texas has all they need for meetings and presentations.

The busy teen also assists with STEAR, a free registry for anyone that needs any form of assistance during times of an emergency or disaster event. The registry provides local emergency planners and responders with additional information on the needs of their community.

The teen, who also hopes to go to law school, knows the importance of volunteering. “I want people to learn that you can make a change in your community. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities you and others can benefit from. I never knew the importance of volunteering until one day I decided to try it out, and I saw the impact it made on me and my community.”
