ABC's OF SUCCESSFUL NOMINATIONS

The ABC's of a successful nomination for volunteer recognition.
Be Aware of nomination deadlines, guidelines, and criteria. Every nomination should be submitted on time and contain all required information. Every nomination should include the required number of references with accurate contact information. References should also reflect the nominee’s achievements for each stated criteria.

Provide good Background sources. Only list references that can provide factual information on the nominee’s specific volunteer efforts and results. Inform each reference that they may be contacted to provide information on the nominee.

Be complete and Concise. Focus only on the highlights of the nominee’s most successful efforts. If a nominee is involved in a variety of activities, mention all efforts, but expand only on those that have the most impact.

Write a narrative statement that contains the following elements:
(Letters of reference will not be considered as narrative statements)

  • Summary – containing information on the mission/purpose of volunteer efforts and the impetus for volunteering
  • Community Need Addressed – containing information of what specific need is addressed; background information on how problem affects specific community; and, who the recipients of the service efforts are
  • Operation Methods – containing information on how many volunteers participate; how often service is provided; how service is funded; specific collaborative efforts; and, what distinguishes nominee’s volunteer efforts from those of others
  • Results – containing information on specific results achieved, (i.e. the number of people affected and expansion or replication of volunteer efforts)
